Amazon failure October 20, 2025

The Amazon failure today may make an interesting video if they are transparent about the causes and fixes. I’ve read one report saying it was DNS, another saying it was an attack. Apparently this started on Sunday US time (10/19/25) and is still wreaking havoc on some of the systems at work, pointing out how many of our regular contracts are running on AWS.

Do you have a link to these two reports?

What ever the root cause, it’s been affecting a number of web sites and services all day, including Amazon Alexa

Since I do not rely on any cloud services for my home security system, cameras, HDHomeRun+OTA TV antenna, and FM/WX radio, I think I will survive.

I will wait for the debrief but a good rule is to never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by legacy code or a mistake made with DNS.

Well Amazon says it was a DNS issue !

give me too, if you got.

I’ve also seen that it was more complex than “just” DNS due to the way their DNS is handled. I think I remember that this started as a database issue that cause the DNS to go offline (or maybe the other way around?) I haven’t seen a really detailed debrief yet so still hoping Tom can get the info and explain it to us.
