I’m an IT manager for a UK business, which is based within the IT Hardware sector. I also run my own company which specialised in web application development too.

I have an ND and HNC in computer science as well as over 20 years of experience in various fields within IT, including IT help desk, IT support, field and on site engineering, network design and engineering, server maintenance and hardware support as well as IT management.

I’ve been running pfSense for a long time, back when I switched over from using Smooth wall, which was back when we switched to fibre broadband (approximately in 2010). At a similar time I also brought my first Synology storage box too.
Since then I’ve been upgrading and working with Synology, pfSense and Unifi hardware and in 2019 I made the descision to deploy this same hardware mix in my main job, which consists of a very large dynamic network using Unifi switches, APs and Synlology storage and pfSense firewalls, with isolated zones that are used for testing and development.

I have skills on: centos, Ubuntu, OpenSuSE and SLES, RHEL, FreeBSD including FreeNAS/TrueNAS and pfSense, Windows desktop from 3.1 through to Windows 11 as well as windows server NT4 through to 2019.
Programming skills in: php, MySQL, jquery, JavaScript, HTML5 and MSSQL

I’m a great believer in sharing knowledge, and this forum is a great place to do that. I frequently like to share issues I’ve run into and how I resolved them in the hope that it helps others who may also run into the same issues. I love the fact that Tom’s company also works with the same hardware set that I’ve either been using for years too, and off the back of that I’ve also switched to using some of the hardware/software which Tom has suggested as well. A good example of that is Graylog. My hope is that as my knowledge grows with that hardware, I can help share some of that back into the community and help others who are just getting started out with it.
