Unifi OS / Cloud Gateway Ultra Confusion?

I’m trying to get started with a Cloud Gateway Ultra (UCGU) that’s been sitting unused for a couple of years, and I’m already confused at step one, wanting it to handle my routing and firewall needs.

I thought I’d need to deploy the UniFi Network Application, but it looks like UniFi OS might replace that now? I’ve also seen suggestions that the Network Application is already built into the UCGU, so I may not need to install anything separately.

Before I commit to a setup, I want to make sure I’m choosing something future‑proof that will still let me manage some older UniFi switches. What’s the correct approach here, given I’ll be wanting to run the gateway for some time without having to swap it out and replace it?

The “cloud gateway” (UCG) products have the built in controller suite. The UXG series are the gateways that require an external controller.

You are good to deploy!

You don’t need to deploy the UniFi Network Application separately. The Cloud Gateway Ultra already runs UniFi OS, and the Network Application is built into it. You access it through the UniFi OS dashboard and manage everything from there. This is actually the future-proof approach since Ubiquiti is moving all controllers into UniFi OS-based devices.
