same dataset and snapshot name, but different capture time and retention
these are the retentions set (not visible on the screenshot):
15 min . ret 2 days
day . ret 45 days
month . ret 3 months
year . ret 3 years
So, let suppose that today is Jan 1 00:00. Now, if I do the math correcly at the end of the year I will have:
192 snapshot: 1 every 15 minutes (2 days)
10 snapshot: 1 every 24 h (10 days)
3 snapshot, 1 every month (3 months)
1 snapshot, 1 every year (first year of 3)
I am I correct? and most importantly, can this work? or the fact that all snapshot have the same name could create issues? so is it possible that the daily purge or the one every 15 minutes could delete other snapshot that needs to be retained?
Of course I can name the snapshots adding -daily, fast, etc but I will have duplicate snapshots with the same data.. and I want to avoid it if possible..
This should work but per the documentation be careful about having them run at the same time as I think they have updated how the retention job looks at the snapshots.
Duplicate snapshots done close in time don’t really cause a storage issue at all. But longer times such as the 3 year retention will cost as much storage as you use during that 3 year period.
I have deleted the task at the end the year, maybe I will connect an external drive and I will it do manual replication.
for the fast and daily tasks; i am in test since last friday and it seems to work, but I am not sure if this is right way to do this thing
as you can see I have the daily snapshots (18-19-20-21-22-23 and 24) as well as the 15 minutes (with FiFo queue).
the prune of the /15 task, deletes the “first out” snapshot but keeping the daily (20:00).
As said it seems to work but I don’t know if it is lucky, a coincidence or it is just how it works.
I didn’t found anything about on truenas doc, maybe I should check on the zfs doc
something like
if "first-out" and not "daily" then delete the snap.
On the gui, it seems that when concurrent snapshot starts, if the snapshot name and dataset are equal, truenas will start 1 task instead of 2.
(that is what I want to achive)
I should check on the logs to confirm it, but I don’t know where to look.
