After watching Tom’s videos I decided to purchase a used server. I am very much out of my depth with all of this and I hope some of you could help me with some problems and/or choices I have to make. First one is proxmox, xcp-ng or freenas?
If you don’t have an actual use case, if it were me, I’d try XCP-ng first, then you could always virtualize freenas within XCP-NG to try it out, and get used to how everything works.
If you want to put any serious data on your freenas VM, then you should really consider putting freenas on a bare metal system with direct access to the hard drives.
Try both xcp-ng and proxmox. Why not. See which one you like better.
You can run freenas in a vm, and on xcp-ng there’s a way to pass-thru the sata. A search should yield results on how, as it’s late and I’m too tired to remember.
Thank you all for the help. I have XCP-NG installed and Xen Orchestra running thanks to Tom’s video. I couldn’t get FreeNas to work as a VM. I’ll keep working at it.
